Custom Orthotics

At Valhalla Physiotherapy we are pleased to offer the prescription and dispensing of custom orthotics. Orthotics are prescribed orthopaedic devices that fit inside your footwear and are made to treat or adjust various biomechanical disorders in the feet and throughout the body.

There are two different types of Orthotics Custom Orthotics and Commercial Orthotics. Commercial Orthotics are mass-produced insoles sold in chemists / supermarkets as a cushioning insole for the feet and have no medical function on the body. Custom Orthotics are custom made Orthotics specially prescribed to the biomechanical and medical needs of the patient. At Valhalla Physiotherapy we specialize in Custom Orthotics only.

Why Custom Orthotics

During standing and walking our bodies are subjected to the natural forces that can inflict mechanical stress and strain throughout our joints. When foot imbalance is present there is a negative impact in the knees / hips / back and neck this imbalance must be removed for to achieve improved posture and alignment. Orthotics help to correct this imbalance improving the biomechanics of the body leading to relief of pains throughout the body.  You may need custom orthotics if you suffer from foot or ankle pain, knee pain, hip, or back pain.

At Valhalla Physiotherapy custom orthotics are provided following a thorough biomechanical and gait assessment by a qualified physiotherapist. Kirby Epp has been prescribing and producing custom orthotics since 1997. Following the assessment, if orthotics are determined to be necessary, specific measurements and a cast or foam imprint of the foot in its “subtalar neutral, non weightbearing” position is taken. The cast is sent to our affiliate laboratory in Calgary where the orthotic is constructed by qualified pedorthic technicians.

Bracing

At Valhalla Physiotherapy we offer a wide range of braces from a number of major manufacturers. From soft neck collars and elbow straps, to patella/knee stabilizers and ankle braces we have you covered. We also carry aircast ankle immobilizers which Physicians often prescribe in place of the traditional plaster cast.

In addition to the “off the shelf” braces, Valhalla Physiotherapy is pleased to offer custom made knee braces by DonJoy. Custom knee braces are very effective for the treatment of ligament injuries (both non operative as well as post operative) as well as the treatment of arthritis.
